Disintermediation (From Wikipedia)

In economics, disintermediation is the removal of intermediaries in a supply chain: “cutting out the middleman.” Instead of going through traditional distribution channels, which has some type of intermediate (such as a distributor, wholesaler, broker, or agent), companies may now deal with every customer directly, for example via the Internet.

In the library context, disintermediation means the death of the library. Instead of trying to find what they want from the library website (where it has been caringly hidden away into what is for them irrelevant silos such as Infotrac and Proquest), students will type their search into Google and be happy with what they retrieve… and in the case of TAFE students, whose information needs aren’t overly demanding, they will be satisfied with the results and probably get away with it. And we’re suddenly out of the loop! And the Finance Department is sharpening the razor.

Library Manager

Avoid muddle in your social affairs and domestic matters especially towards the weekend. Keep your feet firmly on the ground, and don’t entertain vague, impractical ideas or make promises you possibly can’t keep.

Technical Services Librarian

A good week for employment, business affairs, health treatments, romance and family matters. May 15 is adverse, but the rest of the week is very propitious, but could be hard.

Reference Librarian

You’re in a cycle which calls for much hard work. Home and family affairs may be rather difficult if born near May 23. Sudden changes in plans or decisions may be necessary.

Branch Librarian

Your creative ability will be at its highest point in the next few weeks. Why not make use of it? You’ll find yourself more methodical and less critical of other people.

Acquisitions Librarian

Avoid mental or emotional upsets at this time. Hold fast to your natural peace of mind, and don’t be disturbed by eager friends. On Thursday and Friday keep an eye on your domestic welfare.

Marketing Librarian

You’re in a period akin to the “ploughing and sowing” period of the farmer. Anything you begin now will have a bounteous harvest, but you must wait for it to mature.

Library Technician

Family or partnership affairs may be troubled, but there is no time more favorable than now for setting your affairs on a happy and stable basis. May 16 is a little adverse.

Library Assistant

Jupiter is in your 4th House so you have something like a 24 month period during which higher levels of success and happiness are reached. Now is the time to improve things.

Librarians sucked into the social networking maelstrom

A fiendishly clever marketing strategy, allegedly thought up by the geniuses at the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County in North Carolina, has taken the global library world by storm.

This is a very early map of participants. In Melbourne alone, every public library has put their staff through the wringer, and Kangan Batman TAFE is piggy-backing onto Swinburne’s program.

Developers of these so-called Web 2.0 applications must be rubbing their hands together now that the traditional bastion of conservatism (“Dewey has given us a number for everything”) is dabbling in these advertizing rich modes of communication.

Librarians, who are now convinced they must participate in the electronic social networking world to remain relevant, are scrambling to create blogs and MySpace sites, replace LOC subject headings with user created tags (folksonomy), and even re-invent themselves in the virtual universe of Second Life. Crazy, eh?
